The 4th Annual Chanchlani Global Health Research Award and Lecture will honour Vikram Patel, named to TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world 2015.

 

Each year, the Chanchlani award honours a leading scholar who has made significant contributions to global health.

 

Patel is co-founder and former Director of the Centre for Global Mental Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). He is also Co-Director of the Centre for Control of Chronic Conditions for the Public Health Foundation of India, as well as the co-founder and a member of the Managing Committee of the NGO Sangath.

 

“Dr. Patel’s work in the area of mental health has been extremely important to the field of global health,” says Andrea Baumann, Associate V-P Global Health and Director of McMaster University’s MSc Global Health program, “because it addresses unmet needs of those in developing countries. Mental health for all is a crucial message, and Dr. Patel is one of its biggest advocates.”

 

The Chanchlani Global Health Research Award, hosted in partnership with the GHO, was created by the Chanchlani Family and McMaster University in 2012. This year’s ceremony will take place on February 23, 2016, when Patel will deliver a talk titled, “The Black Dog: Why We Don’t Care.”

 

 

Although depression is one of the leading causes of the global burden of disease, there is little action by global or national policy makers to implement the interventions which are known to help people recover. This lecture will consider the assumptions and myths which underpin this inaction and the knowledge base which addresses these. The lecture will propose the necessary steps for the global health community to address one of the most neglected health conditions of our times.
