Upcoming lecture to focus on cultural safety in health policy
Professor Jane Mills, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the College of Health at New Zealand’s Massey University will deliver a lecture – titled ‘Cultural Safety in Health Policy for Maori and Pacific Islander Populations in New Zealand’ – on Oct. 29 at McMaster University.
Mills is one Australia’s foremost nurse academics, with a research portfolio that focuses on rural and public health, health workforce, and health system strengthening. She is internationally recognised as co-authoring ‘Grounded Theory: a practical guide, 2011’, and is the recipient of an Australian Government Office of Learning and Teaching National Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Learning and Teaching.
The talk, co-sponsored by the Global Health Office and the DeGroote School of Business, will focus on the question of how to enact cultural safety for M?ori and Pacific people living and working in Aotearoa New Zealand – an issue that has long been at the forefront of thinking about public health policy. Against a timeline that begins with the Te Tiriti o Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document, this lecture will cover the concept of cultural safety and explore societal and policy changes that have sought to achieve this goal.
The lecture will take place Tuesday Oct. 29, from 8:30 – 10:20 a.m. in MDCL 1309. All are welcome. No registration needed.
