Spotlight On: MSc Global Health Student Andrew Irwin
MSc Global Health student Andrew Irwin was recently selected to represent the program as a Graduate Student Ambassador. In this role, he will be helping to promote the program, communicating with potential applicants, engaging current students in personal and professional development, and connecting with alumni.
Prior to starting at McMaster in September, Irwin completed a B.Sc. Honours in Kinesiology, during which time he studied interval exercise and its effect on blood pressure. He then had the opportunity to implement his research in the field, working as a certified strength and conditioning coach for two years.
“I applied to the Global Health program to broaden my knowledge and abilities in order to positively influence a larger population,” says Irwin. “Through this program, I hope to learn about a holistic approach to health care, combining biomedical, sociocultural, economic, and political strategies to implement sustainable and practical global and community health programs.”
The program’s focus on international collaboration was a draw for Irwin. “Working with peers across continents to solve emerging global health challenges has already helped me improve my communication skills,” he says. “I’ve gained a greater awareness of the macro processes involved in the development of good and ill health in countries around the world, as well as potential solutions to improve global circumstances.”
Looking to the future, Irwin’s hopes to use his education and experience to tackle childhood obesity and help to reduce preventable chronic diseases.
“Being a student ambassador means I can contribute to a positive learning environment for the incoming class of next year and continue building the reputation of the global health program,” says Irwin.
