Norway Visit Strengthens McMaster’s Partnership with USN
New course developments, increased faculty and student mobility, and research collaboration were on the agenda as faculty and staff from McMaster’s MSc Global Health program visited Norway’s University College of Southeast Norway (USN) earlier this month.
Since McMaster and USN received funding from the High North Program, the two institutions have enabled several exchanges and created a new course titled Global transitions within local communities: Small places. Big changes.
As the partnership continues to strengthen, USN plans to officially join the consortium of universities involved in the MSc Global Health program (including Maastricht University in the Netherlands, Manipal University in India, Thammasat University in Thailand, Universidad del Rosario in Colombia, Ahfad University in Sudan, and Niigata University in Japan).
“With the program’s significant growth since we launched in 2010, we’re seeking new ways to work together to solve pressing global health challenges,” says Andrea Baumann, McMaster’s Associate V-P, Global Health and director of the MSc Global Health program. “We’re currently working with USN leadership to move towards offering a Master’s program in global health,” she explains.
The McMaster delegation spent one day in Oslo, meeting with the Ambassador of Canada to Norway, Artur Wilczynski, to discuss current higher education activities between McMaster and USN. Also on the agenda was an invitation to the Ambassador to lecture in the joint course.
The McMaster delegation travelled to Tonsberg for four days, during which time McMaster faculty delivered presentations to USN students and faculty. Andrea Baumann spoke about the Canadian health system and its policy response to migration, and Christy Gombay discussed social capital and the ‘un-welfare’ state. The visitors also met with McMaster students currently on exchange at USN for their winter term.
Currently, five McMaster students are spending their winter term at USN, and faculty from both universities have delivered lectures to global health students across three continents.
