2016 is just around the corner, and the Global Health Office looks forward to the visitors, activities, and events that the New Year will bring. 

 

“The MSc Global Health continues to be recognized as a leading program,” says Andrea Baumann, Associate V-P and Director of the Global Health program. Most recently, the program received the CBIE’s Panorama Award for Outstanding International Education Program, in the Academic category – a prestigious award that recognizes the innovators and leaders in the field of global health. 

 

“As we move into 2016, we are committed to evolving our collaborative program with Maastricht University in the Netherlands, and identifying new partners and approaches to tackling challenges in globalization and health,” Baumann explains. Since its launch in 2010, the program has expanded to include partnerships with Manipal University in India, Thammasat University in Thailand, Universidad del Rosario in Colombia, and Buskerud and Vestfold University College (HBV) in Norway.

 

McMaster is currently developing a joint global health course with HBV that addresses health policy issues of the High North as relevant to both Canada and Norway. In March of this year, the partnership was awarded four-year funding from the High North Fund, administered by the Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education (SIU). 

 

In January, McMaster will welcome 19 exchange students from the Netherlands, while 10 McMaster students will travel to Maastricht to begin their winter semester there. During the exchange, students have the opportunity to specialize in a global health priority area. 

 

Continuing to strengthen ties with the Netherlands, the GHO plans to host His Excellency Cees Kole, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Netherlands to Canada, who will visit McMaster to speak with students as part of the GHO’s annual Global Health Speaker Series.

 

On February 23, 2016, the Chanchlani Global Health Award and Lecture, hosted in partnership with the GHO, will honour Vikram Patel, Co-Founder and former Director of the Centre for Global Mental Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). 

 

The GHO also looks forward to welcoming delegations and visiting scholars, beginning with a delegation of students from Niigata University in Japan. The students, from Niigata’s Graduate School of Health Sciences, will visit McMaster from March 7-11, 2016 for their 10th annual Canada Study Tour.
