International Symposium Starts This Week as Students Gather in India
MSc Global Health students have travelled to Manipal in India for an intense, two-week Global Health Symposium, designed to simulate a real world international summit.
After collaborating virtually with peers from partner universities in Canada, the Netherlands, India and Thailand, over 270 students from the program have gathered at Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) in India to meet and work together in person.
This symposium is the culmination of the program, providing students with the opportunity to pitch their thesis research and scholarly paper ideas – and have those concepts critiqued by their peers and global health experts – and work in teams to create system maps of the Indian health care system.
“It’s always an exciting time of year, as we see students put into practice some of the theoretical concepts they’ve been learning,” says David Hill, who is McMaster’s Academic Program Advisor and also an alumnus of the Global Health program. “And they’re up against real pressures of tight timelines, heat, and jet lag – it’s good preparation for what’s to come in their future careers.”
Today, the groups prepared for field orientation visits, which enable students to gain hands-on experience, learning about local organizations and gaining insight into how the health care system functions in India. Field visits also encourage cross-cultural collaboration as students from different backgrounds come together in groups to solve pressing global health problems.
