Three students from the MSc in Global Health program participated in McMaster’s third annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT®), a university-wide competition for graduate students which ran from February 10-12.

 

The challenge is to present complex research in an engaging, accessible, and compelling way – in just three short minutes. Participants present to a panel of non-specialist judges using only one static presentation slide.

 

Global Health student Osman Raza presented on Health System Strengthening for Primary Health Care, while colleague Samantha Cheuk spoke about Exploring Disability Experiences of Older Adults Living with HIV in Zambia. GH student Jessica Yu made it through to the finals on February 12, with her thesis on The Normalization of Disasters. She was among fourteen finalists from across McMaster, chosen from a field of 33 competitors in four preliminary heats over two intense days.

 

The winner of McMaster’s 3MT®, Teng Guo from the Faculty of Engineering, received $1,000 and will represent McMaster at the Ontario 3MT Final at Western University on April 23.

 

The 3MT® competition was created by the University of Queensland in 2008, with competitions by other Australian and New Zealand universities following, culminating in the first Trans-Tasman competition held in 2010.

 

Now, 3MT® has spread internationally, from Japan to Europe, to Canada and the U.S. UBC ran the first Canadian competition in 2011, and Queen’s and Western held competitions in 2012. In 2014, 19 Ontario universities sent representatives to the Ontario 3MT® Competition at McMaster.
