On April 2, Kenya experienced a horrific terrorist attack when al-Shabaab militants stormed Garissa University College, killing at least 147 people, most of whom were students. In the wake of this act of brutal violence, our thoughts turned to the families of those whose lives were taken, as well as to those working on the front lines to pick up the pieces.

 

Abbas Gullet, Secretary General at Kenya Red Cross Society and member of the MSc in Global Health Advisory Board, said, “the staff and volunteers of the Kenya Red Cross have been on the forefront since the first 30 minutes and continue to help the families of those who died with counselling, trauma management and the logistics of getting bodies to their respective homes for burials.”

 

“This has been by far the worst terrorist attack in Kenya,” Gullet said. “And so sad that it happened to innocent university students. Their parents had spent huge sums of monies to educate them and now their lives have been cut short against their will by the cruel hand of these sad terrorists.”

 

The attack is believed to be the worst terrorist attack on Kenyan soil since the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi in 1998, which killed more than 200 people.
