GHO Hosts Health Professionals from Japan
The Global Health Office recently held a series of meetings with 29 private medical universities in Japan, which included a delegation of 21 health professionals. McMaster has a history of strong collaboration with the Japanese universities and colleges and continues to foster this relationship. The purpose of the visit was to share knowledge about various aspects of medical training in Canada, including recruitment, management, and administration of medical faculty.
In a collaborative presentation on September 25th, Dr. Andrea Baumann (VP Global Health), Dr. David Koff (Associate Professor, Department of Radiology), Dr. John Mernagh (Professor, Department of Radiology and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology), and Dr. Anne Wong (Associate Clinical Professor, Anesthesia Research) discussed the general Canadian medical school administration, as well as trends, and statistics. Using McMaster Radiology as an example, they demonstrated detailed information and processes as requested by the visitors. General themes of interest included costs of medical training in Canada, a comparison of computerization (medical records and documentation/charting), as well as using problem-based learning in the medical curriculum.
To provide the delegation with real world context, the GHO partnered with SickKids Hospital, organizing a tour of their facilities. There, the group had the privilege of meeting with Cathy Seguin (Vice-President of International Affairs) Lara Pietrolungo (Director of International Education) and Dr. Shinya Ito (Division Head of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology and a Senior Scientistin Physiology and Experimental Medicine).
