Featured MSc GH Student Rhonda Boateng: From Haiti and Ghana to Hamilton
Rhonda Boateng joined the MSc Global Health program at McMaster after completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience and Pre-Medicine and a minor in Business Administration at Bishop’s University.
“I’m fascinated by international development, management, health and research,” says Boateng, who has worked with communities in Haiti and Ghana – experiences that gave her insight into “how important the health of a population is to its socio-economic development.” Attending global health conferences in Ottawa and Boston further cemented her desire to apply to the program.
Although born and raised in Montreal, Boateng identifies strongly with her Ghanaian heritage and actively engages in the promotion of African Culture in her community. As Public Relations Officer for the Ghanaian Association of Montreal, she engages in one of her favourite past times: running a blog.
Boateng’s research interests are primarily non-communicable diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly, mental health disorders and breast cancer. As a thesis student, she hopes to build on her past research experience and acquire additional research methods that can be applied to international health projects.
“The program brings together individuals from diverse backgrounds and provides an educational environment that encourages each person to use their unique abilities to solve global health challenges,” says Boateng, who looks forward to working with her fellow student representatives on the Global Health Students’ Advisory Committee to ensure that MSc Global Health students have “the best experience possible.”
