Career event connects Global Health students with job opportunities via online platform
This week, the Global Health Office hosted a career event designed to provide students in the MSc Global Health program with practical tips, including the use of digital tools and networking, to find global health jobs after graduating.
The group heard from Hayley Mundeva, Founder and CEO of ThriveHire – an online career platform that connects people to job opportunities in the global health sector. Mundeva’s talk provided strategies that emerging professionals can use to land jobs in the global health field. For example, she encouraged students to schedule networking into their weekly routines.
The ThriveHire team works with organizations including CARE Canada and Save the Children and was recently awarded the National Youth Innovation Award by the United Nations Association in Canada and the British Council Canada.
Also presenting at the event was Rhonda Boateng, MSc Global Health program alumna, who shared her career path since graduating. In 2017, after defending her Mac thesis, which explored the mental health of Ghanaian women with breast cancer, Boatang moved to Ghana where she worked as research and policy coordinator for the Peace & Love Hospital, a hospital specializing in breast cancer treatment.
Today, she is a clinical research project coordinator at SickKids in Toronto, working in the departments of Policy and Economics Research in Childhood Cancer and the SickKids Caribbean Initiative.
“Overall, I found that the event motivated me to take action towards my career goals and gave me a new and more streamlined approach to doing so,” said Global Health student Amanda Giancola.
“Hayley prompted us to use digital tools like ThriveHire to search for opportunities within the field of global health, while Rhonda spoke to her experience during and after her MSc Global Health and to the normalcy of a non-linear career path.”
