Andrea Baumann recognized as member of the Order of Canada at official ceremony
The dangerously cold weather and winter storm conditions didn’t dampen the spirits of the six officers and 18 members – including Andrea Baumann, associate V-P global health and director of McMaster University’s MSc Global Health program – who were invested into the Order of Canada this week.
Baumann received the country’s highest civilian honour at a small ceremony at the Citadelle of Québec on Feb.12, when she was presented with the Order’s iconic snowflake insignia by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada.
Honoured for her significant contributions and leadership in health human resource capacity-building and transdisciplinary collaboration both in Canada and around the world, Baumann said, “It was an opportunity to listen to a diversity of perspectives at a national level.”
Baumann is one of four McMaster professors to receive the Order this year. She is joined by Mohit Bhandari ‘99, professor of surgery for the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine; Jamal Deen, professor of electrical and computer engineering; and Jack Gauldie ’64, professor emeritus of the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine.
Alumni include Thomas Dignan, Health Sciences ’81, Kevin Dancey, math and economics ’72, Arthur Slutsky, Health Sciences ’76, and Ron Foxcroft, who was awarded an honorary McMaster degree in 2001.
The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. It recognizes people in all sectors of Canadian society for their varied contributions which have enriched the lives of others and made a difference to the country.
