Global Health post-doctoral fellow receives CIHR funding to tackle health system challenges

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is Canada’s federal funding agency for health research. Its aim is to support discoveries and innovations that improve our health and strengthen our healthcare system through collaboration with partners and researchers.

As the Government of Canada continues to invest in innovative perspectives to Canada’s healthcare system, the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health, has recently announced a total investment of over $4.7M to the CIHR Health System Impact (HSI) Fellowship program.

With Canada’s continuous support for improving the delivery of equitable healthcare, this program provides  doctoral trainees and postdoctoral researchers a unique opportunity to work directly within health organizations to tackle real-world health system challenges.

As one of the recipients of the HSI Fellowship program, McMaster University Global Health postdoctoral fellow, Valentina Antonipillai, in collaboration with research teams at McMaster and Statistics Canada will analyze data on long-term care workers and engage stakeholders to strengthen the evidence base and help guide policy reform in long-term care.

“The pandemic has exposed policy information gaps in the sector and this research program aims to engage with stakeholders and strengthen the evidence-base to inform long-term care policy reform” states Antonipillai.

CIHR funding will support innovative research such as the work of Antonipillai’s and will span a wide range of healthcare priorities from improving transitions in care and supporting the wellbeing of our health workforce to improving healthcare in rural areas and innovating long-term care.
