Critical Global Health – just launched!
We are proud to announce the launch of a ratified GSA club aimed towards McMaster Global Health graduate students.
Critical Global Health (CGH; https://gsa.mcmaster.ca/cgh/) is a working group composed of students from the McMaster Global Health graduate programs, at both the MSc and Ph.D. levels.
We provide spaces for students to discuss current discourses that are unfolding within the field of Global Health, specifically contemporary issues, such as bioethics, the longstanding consequences of colonialism, and epistemic violence within research.
This club affords the collaboration of students across McMaster University and a space for critical iterative conversation, learning, professional development, and praxis of Global Health theories within and beyond the McMaster community. We are a working group centred on the principles of equity, social justice, and transformative change surrounding the issues within the field of Global Health.
We provide the following four avenues for engagement for our members:
- Activism
- Education
- Professional Development
- Scholarship
Some planned events we are looking forward to this academic year:
- Speaker series titled “Health Equity for (in)visible Minorities: Envisioning Change.”
- This successful series was launched last year with the first Ph.D. cohort, and it showcases the work, research, and activism of racialized gender and sexual minorities from the Ph.D. cohort. This year we are selecting a few MSc students to present.
- Reading club.
- We aim to meet once a month and discuss topics that go beyond the curriculum. This will include a “brown-bag” presentation by a set of members followed by a critical discussion. Asides from the conventional articles and book chapters, our reading materials will include blog posts, Twitter threads, podcasts, and Youtube videos.
- Workshops on crafting a manuscript fit for publication.
- These courses will be led by students who have successfully published and also serve as reviewers at journals. We will be teaching you on how to do the following: selecting an ideal journal, writing a strong cover letter to the editors, structuring your manuscript, and much more. We will also be providing resources and checklists that you can use.
