Annual student-run journal highlights global issues and research inspired by UN goals
The sixth issue of the student-led, open access journal Global Health: Annual Review (GHAR) is now published and available online. The GHAR, which showcases research influenced by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is transdisciplinary and collaborative by design, inviting submissions from students, academics, and professionals from the McMaster community and beyond.
This year edition provides insight into global health issues near and far, from how COVID has changed the fabric of our health systems, to how health innovations can contribute to the empowerment of communities. The issue features research articles, opinion editorials, reflective narratives and art-based narratives which demonstrate the interplay between the biological, social, and physical factors that influence health and disease globally. The themes that were selected this year are not static – rather, the work within them has been curated with intention to highlight their intersectionality and interplay with one another.
For issue 6, the GHAR team introduced a double-blinded peer-reviewed process and facilitated workshops for researchers and scholars. Furthermore, as the team recognizes the value of anecdotes and storytelling in the field of global health, the submission criteria was widened to focus on lived experiences and features reflective meditations by people who are on the frontlines of meaningful global health work.
This year’s Editors-in Chief, Tanya Tewari, both graduates of the MSc Global Health program, hope that Issue 6 nourishes knowledge, inspires learning, and furnishes curiosity.

Additional editorial team members this year were Hanna Girdler, Josh Neposlan, and Noa Lashevsky who are all MSc Global Health program graduates.
