Bridging Different Worlds, Day 11: Field Visit
Yesterday was the last field visit of the Global Health Symposium. Group 20 of the Mental Health cluster visited Hombelakku, a psychiatric rehabilitation center in Manipal. This facility provided housing as well as day care services for its residents. Patients here were suffering from a variety of disorders, from schizophrenia and bipolar disorders to severe OCD cases.
The group had the opportunity to observe the facility for the different services that it provided. The students also witnessed group therapy in session, in which all the residents were made to sit in a circle and each one was asked to read out loud an article from a newspaper or book. Psychologists, psychiatric nurses, psychiatric social workers and occupational therapists visited often to keep track of the progress of their patients.
