Global Health Symposium April 24 – Daily Recap: Orientation & The Great Symposium Race!
Yesterday morning, all Global Health students gathered in a lecture hall for Symposium Orientation. Six different topics will be explored in 24 different groups: Occupational Health, Environmental Health, Infectious Diseases, Mental Health, Traditional Health, and Reproductive and Child Health. The goal is to create a System Map, depicting the complex relationships between all actors involved in a specific health problem.
The teams met for the first time during the Great Symposium Race, an intense competition challenging groups to quickly solve globally inspired trivia questions. One of the students of the winning team, Myria Koutsoumpa, said their secret was: “Team work. We had many people working simultaneously on different questions. We used our expertise and differences, and we divided tasks. We had a carrier with long legs and non- slippery shoes, an observer that was cheering and supporting, and a note-taker right in the middle of the group who was taking down all the questions.” The informal exercise helped greatly in quickly forming a bond between the team members.
“Now that I have met everyone, and we seem to get along very well with each other, I am even more motivated to go to the field. The good start makes me more confident about our research project and its results.”
The race was followed by additional team building activities and group planning for upcoming community visits.
