Karunya Special School Visit: Reflections with Dr. Paamillah Parveez
How was your field visit yesterday?
We went to the Karunya Special School in Udupi, which is a school for differently abled children. Due to summer vacations, none of the children were present during our visit. However, we were able to have an interesting conversation with the founder of the institute. The school was founded in May 2017, with eighteen students. Currently, eight staff members are working here. The school caters to different types of students such as those with autism, bipolar, down syndrome between ages 3.5 to 17 years. Activities include music therapy, dance therapy, yoga, sports, gardening and other classes.
What did you learn?
The school building was rented, and they have not received funds from the government. According to regulations, the school has to operate for three years with a minimum of 25 students to get funding. Therefore, students of the school are charged and have to pay out-of-pocket fees. However, those who cannot afford can negotiate about the fees.
How is working in your group?
Our group dynamics is going very smooth, we have made some rules before the group activities, and have maintained this. During the discussions, we do have debates, but this does not lead to disputes. We appreciate and respect each other’s thoughts, and settle at a common point. Our group leader has the skills to guide us. It is a good experience to cooperate with students from McMaster and Maastricht, we are having a good time together!
