Global Health Symposium April 28 – Daily Recap: A Day of Cultural Workshops in Manipal
Yesterday morning, Global Health students had the opportunity to experience a taste of Indian culture and participate in a variety workshops organized by the Manipal symposium team! Students could pick and choose between yoga, traditional dance, cooking and an Indian philosophy lecture. We caught up with a few students and asked them to describe their experience!
Highlights from the Cooking Workshop with Sylvia Gawad (McMaster University):
“The cooking workshop was an amazing experience and exceeded my expectations! I’ve tried cooking Indian food in the past and felt it was quite complicated, but today seeing the chef cook with the actual spices and not just the mixed ones, it really helped to solidify the recipe for me!
We had a delicious assortment of dishes that included, tomato soup, gajar ka halwa, palk paneer, dal makhani , butter chicken and mixed vegetable rice. I was also quite impressed that we used only 4 spices to cook most of the dishes!
I will definitely try creating these dishes back home and will be participating in more workshops in the future – the overall experience was incredible!”
Discovering Yoga with Kris Schurch, Fleur Froeling and Ruth de Weert (Maastricht University):
“We had a wonderful experience during the Yoga workshop today! We discovered a variety of good body stretches, postures and breathing exercises.
Some of the postures were tough, however when you focused on your breathing, instead of letting your thoughts wander, it really did get easier! We got to test our flexibility a little bit as well, and see where we needed to improve. We love how they guided and explained everything; you feel refreshed and so relaxed by the end of the session. A great tool to have during a busy symposium. We will definitely do it again and recommend it to others as well!”
