International Surgery Desk Improves Global Outcomes

Activities across the Faculty of Health Sciences continue to demonstrate the diverse ways in which faculty members are strengthening internationalization at McMaster University.

With this in mind, the Global Health Office congratulates the International Surgery Desk (ISD) in the Department of Surgery. From assisting wounded soldiers and civilians in the Ukraine to performing general surgery in Angola, the ISD is committed to providing much-needed service in low and middle-income countries, and improving global outcomes through safer surgery.

This month, the ISD have released their Spring 2016 newsletter, highlighting the important work they have been doing, which includes MSc Global Health program faculty member and ISD director Brian Cameron’s project for African surgical residents – an e-learning collaboration initiative with the University of Toronto, the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, and the College of Surgeons of East, Central and South Africa.

“McMaster is a national leader in global surgery initiatives with dozens of faculty volunteering their time not only for surgical missions, but especially to support training and collaborative research with surgical leaders in low resource settings,” says Cameron, adding, “We have longstanding surgical education partnerships with Guyana, Uganda and Haiti.”
