McMaster’s Admissions Process for Health Sciences Continues to Attract International Attention
McMaster’s programs in health sciences select candidates who demonstrate the potential to become Canada’s future leaders in global health and medicine – and the university’s exemplary admissions process was a major topic of discussion during meetings between McMaster faculty and six medical professionals from the University of Ulsan.
The Global Health Office was pleased to welcome the professors from South Korea, who were gathering information that would assist them in revamping their medical school admissions and other processes.
Ulsan’s Dr. Yoon-Seon Lee was interested in learning more about McMaster’s Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI), which involve situational questions that cover ethical decision making, critical thinking, communication skills, and health care and societal issues. MMI was pioneered at McMaster in 2002 and the interview style has since been adopted by institutions around the world to screen the personal traits of medical school applicants.
The delegation attended curriculum sessions with Dr. Robert Whyte, admissions sessions with Dr. Margo Mountjoy and Wendy Edge, and also had the opportunity to tour the anatomy lab and Centre for Simulation Based Learning. The group also met with Dr. Andrea Baumann, McMaster’s Associate Vice-President, Global Health, and Dr. Paul O’Byrne, Dean and Vice-President, Faculty of Health Sciences.
“In the context of global health, learning exchanges like this are critical,” explains Baumann. “They allow us to open the dialogue, share innovations, develop cross-cultural understanding, and learn about health systems in other countries.”
