Global Health Program to Offer Field Experience in Jamaica
With the growth of McMaster University’s Master of Science in Global Health program comes exciting opportunities for students to gain real world experience in the global health field. The program’s partnership with the University of the West Indies (UWI) means that two graduate students will be able to complete their field practicum – a requirement of the program – in Jamaica.
The World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre at UWI has been tasked with documenting the status of nursing and midwifery human resources in the Caribbean region. Over the course of ten weeks (May 14-July 23, 2018), students will work closely with professors from UWI, while liaising with a supervisory team at McMaster to conduct an analysis of the reports, documents, literature and databases available on health human resources in the region.
Students will develop a human resource framework, such as an environmental scan, with guidance from the McMaster team using available tools and relevant models for projecting workforce requirements in Jamaica. This framework will then be applied to the rest of the region.
Andrea Baumann, Associate V-P Global Health and Centre Director of McMaster’s WHO Collaborating Centre, said, “The field practicum component of the program allows students to gain a global perspective and put into practice the theory, concepts, and methods they’ve been learning throughout the course of the program.”
This particular practicum, says Baumann, “will strengthen the relationship between our two collaborating centres, while highlighting to students the importance of cooperation in making a difference in public health globally.”
