Global Obesity Pandemic the Focus of Upcoming Chanchlani Lecture
Dariush Mozaffarian – cardiologist, epidemiologist and Dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science & Policy at Tufts University – will receive this year’s Chanchlani Global Health Research Award. He will deliver a lecture at McMaster University on February 12, 2018.
In 2016, Thomson Reuters named Mozaffarian as one of the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds. He has authored more than 300 scientific publications on the dietary priorities to reduce cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity in the US and globally; and on evidence-based systems innovations and policies to effectively reduce these burdens. He has served in numerous advisory roles for the US and Canadian governments: American Heart Association, Global Burden of Diseases study, World Health Organization, and United Nations. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio, Time Magazine, and many other outlets.
“Nutrition is a critical global and public health issue,” says Andrea Baumann, Associate V-P Global Health, and Director of McMaster’s MSc Global Health program. “We are excited to hear from Dr. Mozaffarian and learn about his important work, which has helped to shape nutrition policy internationally.”
The Chanchlani Global Health Research Award, hosted in partnership with the Global Health Office, was created by the Chanchlani family and McMaster University in 2012.
About the talk
In this talk, Dr. Mozaffarian will explore the global obesity pandemic and the ways in which diet quality influences risk pathways and conditions that produce larger health burdens than those related to obesity alone. His presentation will focus on the critical role of optimal nutrition in tackling this global health priority, and why improving overall diet quality should be the primary target of dietary policies.
Mozaffarian will discuss specifically the growing epidemic and global burden of cardiometabolic diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which are a leading cause of death in low and middle-income countries.
